Crash / Event Data Recorders

Stand alone EDR data collectors of various descriptions have been in use around the world for years. The more recent US adaptation of an EDR systems added to the crash sensing and deployment components of air bag systems in surface motor vehicles is an effort aimed at creating a larger knowledge base from which to draw information on "real world" crashes. Such information will be used to augment traditional crash test data and assist and improve collision analysis as well as further the overall understanding of the traffic collision event in a multilevel approach to improve traffic safety.

The automobile Event Data Recorder (EDR) has become the subject of conjecture and misinformation nearly unequaled in the quest for improved automotive safety. This presentation by W.R. "Rusty" Haight will address the basic evolution, application and operation of the EDR system first internationally and then relative to the US market. It provides a historical and developmental foundation for those who would attend the CDR System Certification course that is being sponsored by WATAI on May 9-10, 2002.

Tuition: $250 USD includes Vetronix certification and ACTAR CEUs, if applicable
Register early because class size is limited.

Featured Instructor: W. R. "Rusty" Haight

Contact Hours/CEUs:
16 hours over 2 days. Course completion meets the requirements for the Vetronix CDR System Operator individual certification. Pre-approved for 12 ACTAR CEUs.

Prerequisite and other restrictions:
Successful completion of at least an Advanced Collision Investigation course or equivalent exposure to traffic collision investigation concepts and techniques.

Ownership of the CDR System, although suggested, is not required and the design of this course is such that even those who have not yet obtained a system will better understand this evolving technology and benefit from the information.

General:
Train end users of the Vetronix Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) System to operate and utilize the CDR tool appropriately through
1. In-class presentation of concepts, terms and materials,
2. Hands on toolkit use downloading from SDM units and in vehicles
3. Exposure to examples of comparisons of collected EDR data and known or control values

Specific:
1. Why Event Data Recorders are being installed in private vehicles
2. Overview of historical development of in-vehicle event data collection
3. Data sources within the vehicle
4. Types of data collected, generalized
5. The mechanics of data collection using a CDR System tool
6. What the data means - basic data interpretation with a focus on appropriate collision reconstruction methodologies
