Crash Testing with Rusty Haight
WATAI is pleased to host Rusty Haight and his entourage of car-crash aficionados at our 2005 Fall Conference. Rusty and his team will be conducting a series of fully instrumented and documented staged vehicle collisions Monday, October 10th. Rusty Haight has crashed cars around the world and is highly regarded within the collision reconstruction community as an outstanding lecturer, knowledgeable instructor and competent reconstructionist. Though the number and types of crashes has yet to be finalized, the benefits of witnessing “real-life” collisions as they occur and viewing uncontaminated collision scenes cannot be undervalued. Rusty and crew will present their findings of Monday’s staged crashes Tuesday during our afternoon session. A CD containing all data collected (before and after vehicle photos, real time and slow motion collision videos, CDR data <if applicable>, accelerometer traces, etc., etc.) will be provided to all conference attendees prior to the conclusion of the conference Tuesday afternoon, October 11th. Those of you who have been fortunate enough to witness Rusty’s car crash antics at one or more of the ARC-CSI conferences can appreciate the quality and quantity of the data provided by Rusty’s excellent technical staff.

NHTSA-NASS:
Its function and place in the Collision Reconstruction Community with Kitty Enstrom. Ms. Enstrom, the lead researcher at the Seattle NASS office will offer an overview of the NASS program, the support offered to local law enforcement agencies and NASS’s role in making vehicles safer. Ms. Enstrom will take attendees through a typical NASS investigation, including the crush profiling of crashed vehicles.

Business Meeting
During Tuesday’s morning session nominations will be opened for the following Executive Board and Board of Director’s positions: Vice President (currently Troy Orf), Treasurer (currently Mel Knittel), Board Position #1 (currently Steve Harbinson), Board Position #3 (currently Mark Chapman) and Board Position #5 (currently Rocky Desimini). All current regular and corporate members are eligible to hold office.

Additional Training Opportunity:
Not only are we excited to have Rusty join us for our Fall Conference, we are pleased to announce his company – Collision Safety Institute is offering their 3-day CDR class in the Seattle area October 12-14. If you have or are considering acquiring a Vetronix CDR Tool you’ll want to consider becoming a Certified Operator. Successful completion of this 3-day course provides that certification. This is the first time this course has been offered in the State of Washington for some time. Visit Rusty’s website at www.collisionsafety.net for additional course details, class location and on-line registration.
NOTE: The ARC Network offers a $200 discount and free one-year membership in the ARC Network when you purchase a Vetronix CDR System Kit through the ARC Network - click here for details.

2005 WATAI Spring Conference

Speed from Translational Yaw
Instructor: Tom Shelton
Friday May 20, 2005
9:00 a.m. Meeting Starts
Seattle Police Department Traffic Meeting Room
2203 Airport Way South
Seattle, WA. 98134

Speed from Translational Yaw - There are well-known hand-held equations for calculating the speed of a vehicle that is decelerating in-line or for a vehicle that is in a critical speed yaw. The application of these equations is taught in accident investigation and reconstruction courses throughout the country. However, few of these courses teach their students how to calculate the speed of a vehicle that is in a translational yaw.

Tom Shelton - Shelton & Associates, Accident Reconstruction and Collision Analysis, California. Tom Shelton retired from the California Highway Patrol after 31 years of service. He was with the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) and served as Investigator, Dynamics Specialist, Assistant Coordinator, Team Leader, and Instructor at the CHP Academy. The purpose of this presentation is to review the hand-held methods available for the calculation of speed from a vehicle in a translational yaw.

2003 WATAI Fall Conference

Bus Testing
October 8th and 9th 2003*
King County Metro Transit Maintenance Facility
11911 E. Marginal Way South
Tukwila, WA. 98168

The speakers are Metro Transit employees trained in their field of specialty. This training will be as an extension of the earlier bus testing conducted by WATAI in 1985.

On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning several different coaches will be tested for acceleration and deceleration capabilities. Testing will include several different coaches: a 35 and 40-foot Gillig bus, a 60-foot articulated New Flyer, a 40-foot “low-profile” coach, and a 60-foot articulated “low-profile” coach. In addition, Metro Transit is allowing conference attendees to view a bus undercarriage while hoisted in the air with an employee speaker providing an overview of the components.

Conference attendees will have an opportunity to participate in the field testing and, if desired, ride on-board the coaches as passengers while tests are being conducted. Tentative classroom topics include coach braking systems, operator training requirements, and bus maintenance practices.
