15 GOOD REASONS WHY A SAFETY BELT LAW WILL BENEFIT NEBRASKANS

  1. Of all the things you can do to lessen the severity of a crash, wearing a safety belt is the single most important thing. Safety belts save lives and prevent injuries.

  2. Safety belt laws are the most effective way to encourage people to buckle up.

  3. One in every 16 Nebraska drivers will be involved in a motor vehicle crash this year.

  4. 87% of the people killed in Nebraska crashes in 1991 were not wearing safety belts.

  5. Crashes are the #1 cause of premature death in Nebraska.

  6. Crashes kill over 40,000 people in the U.S. every year. If everyone in the front seat buckled up, about 15,000 of those lives could be saved.

  7. Crashes kill almost 300 people in Nebraska every year. If everyone in the front sear buckled up, about 112 of those lives could be saved.

  8. States with safety belt laws have up to 20% fewer crash fatalities than states without laws.

  9. Safety belts prevent ejections. About 1/3 of Nebraska crash fatalities are thrown from vehicles.

  10. Safety belts help drivers maintain control of their cars in emergencies - protecting themselves and "the other guy."

  11. Safety belts are your best defense against drunk drivers.

  12. Crashes are the #1 killer of Nebraska youth.

  13. Failure to wear safety belts triples the cost of medical care for people injured in crashes.

  14. Taxpayers who wear safety belts are subsidizing those who don't by paying for their public emergency services, uninsured medical care, tax supported rehabilitation programs, lost productivity and survivor payments. Increased safety belt use will save taxpayers billions of dollars annually.

  15. Because of its new safety belt law, Nebraska will continue to receive millions of dollars annually in federal highway construction funds.

An unrestrained 150 pound person in a 40 mile an hour crash will strike interior car surfaces (the dash, the windshield, etc.) or be thrown out of the car with an impact force of about 6000 pounds. That would be like hitting the ground after diving out of a five story building! A safety belt prevents this "human collision."

Buckle up for life, Nebraska!
It's a good law!
