ARC Network report on Alaska Air Plane Crash
Jan 31, 2000 - An Alaska Airlines jet en route to San Francisco from Mexico crashed Monday in the Pacific Ocean after reporting mechanical difficulties. Flight 261 from Puerto Vallarta was reported down 20 miles northwest of the Los Angeles airport about 3:45 p.m., said Mitch Barker, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. It was unclear how many people were on the plane, which Barker said was a Boeing 737. The capacity of a 737, depending on the model, ranges from 108 to 189 seats.

Oct 5, 1999 (LONDON) - A shattering train collision near Paddington Station during rush hour Tuesday morning killed at least eight people and injured scores. The crash happened in Ladbroke Grove in west London, about a mile (1.2 km) from Notting Hill.

Aug 2, 1999 (INDIA) - Up to 500 people were feared dead when two passenger trains collided head on Monday at a railway station in eastern India, in one of the country's worst train disasters.


July 1, 1999 (FRANCE) — Authorities say no one survived when a cable car carrying 21 people crashed to the ground early today at a resort town in the French Alps.
The cable car fell about 260 feet to the ground in Saint-Etienne en Devoluy, a ski resort south of Grenoble in the Hautes-Alpes region of the French Alps, according to regional authorities.


March 16, 1999 (USA - Illinois) - More bodies were found early Tuesday, the morning after an Amtrak train derailed and caught fire when it slammed into a tractor-trailer south of Chicago. Several other people remained unaccounted for following the Monday night collision that killed at least 12 people and injured more than 100, some critically.
