The Whatcom County Sheriff's Traffic Unit consists of four traffic deputies, a traffic safety education specialist, and one sergeant. Our Traffic Deputies have collateral duties in enforcement, investigation, and training. Each deputy is assigned both a motor and patrol vehicle.

Our investigative duties include routine investigation of all collisions occurring on county roads. Traffic Deputies also serve on a rotating call-out system for all critical injury, fatal, and deputy involved crashes. In addition, the Traffic Unit provides forensic mapping services to our crime scene investigators.

Every member of our Traffic Unit is an instructor in at least one training discipline. Traffic Deputies provide training in Radar/LIDAR, EVOC, Skid Car, PIT, Motors, Collision Investigation, Forensic Mapping, and Defensive Tactics. Our unit takes pride in the quality of training we offer our deputies and other local agencies.

The primary goal of the Traffic Unit is to prevent the death, injury, and property damage that results from motor vehicle collisions. We review and update our traffic safety programs annually to insure progress towards our goals.
