The Collision Investigation Unit was started in 1990 and consisted of 3 officers trained in Crash Reconstruction.  The main purpose of the unit was to investigate civilian crashes involving Critical Injuries and Fatalities. Since its inception, the unit has grown to 13 Investigators and 1 Supervisor.  All of the Investigators are trained in multidiscipline aspects of Crash Reconstruction including Pedestrian, Commercial and Motorcycle Reconstruction. Several of our Investigators are also certified Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanics. The unit utilizes technology such as Total Stations, 2D and 3D animation as well as the CDR technology. CIU also investigates Emergency Vehicle crashes and regularly assists outside agencies with Mutual Aid Assistance.
