The Department of Public Safety's mission is to provide the best possible law enforcement service and law enforcement support services to the people of New Mexico. These services are provided through three programs: Law Enforcement, Public Safety Support, and Information Technology. The department is administered through the Department Support Program.

The New Mexico State Police, with an honored tradition of more than sixty-five years of service, is the backbone for the Law Enforcement Program. The Motor Transportation Division (MTD) and Special Investigation Division (SID) add critical expertise and experience to the Law Enforcement Program.
