We are the third largest police agency in the State of Illinois and are located approximately 40 miles West of Chicago. Aurora is a community of approximately 150,000 residents and is experiencing continued commercial and residential growth. The city is projected to be the second largest in the State of Illinois in the new millennium.

Our department consists of approximately 270 sworn officers and 80 civilians delivering police services in an area encompassing over 40 square miles in four counties. We are a leader within the State of Illinois in our community policing initiatives. The department was reorganized in 1995 to provide a geographical policing concept with police commanders responsible for three geographical precincts within our community. Our Neighborhood Policing Bureau is comprised of Patrol, Community Policing officers, Special Operations Group and Investigations, who are under the direction of our three Area Commanders. Support Services are directed by the Deputy Chief of Police to provide administrative, telecommunications, record-keeping, and jail functional support to the Area Commanders.

We have developed a solid foundation within our community involving partnerships with active citizen groups who assist in neighborhood walking patrols and problem-solving efforts with our department. A community mobilization plan in 1997 resulted in a Community Advisory Board representative of our community resources to focus all efforts on violent crime attributed to gang and drug activities. We are determined as a community to work together and improve our total quality of life concerns for all.
