Our department is responsible for providing service to approximately 8 square miles of incorporated South Fulton County, Georgia (10 mins south of the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport). We have approximately three miles of interstate 85 running through our city as well as two major State highways (138 and 14). We are approximately 55 sworn strong and have a full time traffic unit. We have five officers who are fully trained in traffic collision reconstruction discipline. We provide service for a daily service population of 65K and a residential population of 16K.

Since the City's incorporation Police Services has consistently grown with the rest of the Metropolitan Atlanta area. The city's police service has grown in direct proportion with the growth of the city and the subsequent crime rate. Today the Union City Police Services Bureau has a service population that rivals several of the area's larger cities and departments.

During the 1995-96 reporting period, the City of Union City recorded a 21 percent decrease in reported serious crimes, according to the Metropolitan Atlanta Crime Commission statistics. This is due to an innovative, aggressive and sensitive approach to combating crime. The City's adopted policy of the combination of police and fire services into the Department of Public Safety has enabled the City to place more officers on the street engaging in both reactive and proactive patrol techniques. The obvious benefits associated with increased training requirements in hiring practices have resulted in a young, highly motivated group of law enforcement professionals that are dedicated to making a positive difference in the community they serve.

The Police Services Bureau is headquartered at the Police administration complex, which is located across the street from City Hall.

The Bureau is composed of administration, the patrol division as well as several specialized divisions. These include: the Special Operations Group (SOG) that responds to drug intervention activities in addition to major case development and investigation; the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) which responds to routine criminal investigations and acts as investigative support to the uniformed officers; the Traffic Enforcement Unit which is composed of specially trained and equipped officers that respond to traffic enforcement issues in addition to major traffic crash investigations; a Community Oriented Police Office that works with the civic and business leaders of the community to establish and maintain communication with members of the community.
Records

The records maintenance system is computerized and capable of providing simple research and duplication for citizen use as well as the police officers. Police statistics are maintained and available upon request daily during regular business hours. The Union City Police Services Bureau is a regular contributor to the State of Georgia's Uniform Crime Reporting database. Monthly reports are prepared and submitted to the Georgia Criminal Information Center
