For more than a century, the Savannah Police Department and
the Chatham County Police Department patrolled the Coastal Empire of Southeast
Georgia. Both departments boast a proud heritage of law enforcement. Late
in 2001, the officials from both the city and county governments began working
on an idea of merging the two departments into one law enforcement entity.
Realizing that criminals very seldom pay attention to jurisdictional boundaries,
and often criminal cases that one entity was working on were often linked
to other cases in adjourning areas, it only made sense to proceed toward
a “joined” department. In October 2003, both departments began
the merger process, with Chief Dan Flynn selected to lead the newly merged
department. Today the “new” department boasts approximately
575 sworn officers and 200 civilians, charged with providing police services
to the 225, 000 residents of the Savannah and Chatham County.
With 6 precincts and the expected addition of another, spread
out throughout the entire jurisdiction, the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan
Police Department carries on the long standing tradition of providing professional
law enforcement to the citizenry of the Coastal Empire.
