The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has an authorized strength of 231 sworn positions, 63 civilian positions and 28 crossing guards. We were the 48th police department to be recognized nationally as an accredited police department and the first to receive certification by the State of Georgia.
Athens-Clarke County has a population of approximately 103,881 people. Athens is home to the world's only double barrel cannon and the famed tree that owns itself. Athens has a large artistic community and has garnered attention for its vibrant music scene. The combination of artists, students and local Athenians creates a very diverse population presenting unique challenges for the law enforcement community.

Therefore, our budget service plan is designed to reduce victimization throughout our venue, to ensure implementation of Quality Leadership and Problem Solving Principles, and to adhere to the Rule of Law.
The traffic unit is responsible for the investigations of collisions ranging from minor to fatality. Serious injury and fatality collisions are analyzed and reconstructed. The traffic unit consists of several collision reconstruction officers with decades of experience. The traffic unit also is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws. The goal of enforcement is to gain voluntary compliance with traffic laws in order to reduce collisions and make the streets of Athens-Clarke County safer for the motoring public. The traffic unit uses both marked police motorcycles and cars for enforcement. The traffic unit currently consists of eighteen officers.
The traffic unit is located at the west police sub-station at 1060 Baxter St. The police headquarters is located at 3035 Lexington Rd, ph 706-613-3330 and the Westside police station is at located inside the Georgia Square Mall at 3700 Atlanta Hwy, ph 706-613-3850.
