Collision reconstructionists and hit and run investigators are assigned to this specialized unit of the Traffic Section.
A collision reconstructionist is a specially trained police officer responsible for investigating the circumstances of all collisions that result in serious injuries or death. Also members of Traffic Response teams, the Service's seven reconstruction officers complete several additional courses enabling them to collect and evaluate evidence from a collision scene.
Using photography, measurements of skid patterns and other information, they are able to determine a variety of collision factors, including speed of travel, direction of travel and force of impact, to determine the cause of the incident and if any charges are warranted.
They are also responsible for creating evidence packages for court and for providing expert testimony when required.
