MAY 2005 - Accident Reconstruction Newsletter

This month's newsletter focuses ARC-CSI Crash Conference Results

Welcome to the May 2005 issue of the Accident Reconstruction Newsletter. Please see the topical links in the column to the right for this months featured articles.

ARC-CSI Crash Conference 2005Typically we skip this month's newsletter due to organizing and conducting the annual ARC-CSI Crash Conference. However, we thought we would share the results of the conference in this issue.

The ARC-CSI Crash Conference was conducted earlier this month and we had our biggest turnout to date. There were over 200 people who attended the Crash Testing day at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and about 170 people attending the presentations.

For those who could not make it to the Crash Conference this year, the conference CD is available to purchase online . There are 2 CDs for this conference, the first CD contains the PowerPoint presentations of the speakers and the 2nd CD contains all of the Data (videos, digital photos, CDR downloads, data summaries for all crashes, acceleration files, scene/vehicle documentation, and more). There are over 40 video clips containing normal speed, high-speed, slow-motion and multi-angles (including in-car, overhead and roof cameras) and over 400 digital photographs.

We would like to thank North Las Vegas Police Department, Las Vegas Metro Police Department, North Las Vegas Fire Department, United Road Service, Quality Towing and North Las Vegas Roadway Operations for their dedication to our conference and helping make the conference a success.

We would also like to thank Tim Brown and Keith Raymer at TopCon for sponsoring the lunches at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Thanks also goes out to Dan Vomhof, III and 4N6XPRT Systems for providing vehicle data and MapScenes for putting in the extra hours to help us map the vehicles and crashes.

This was the fourth year hosting the ARC-CSI Crash Conference and we have tentatively scheduled the 2006 ARC-CSI Crash Conference for June 5-8, 2006 in Las Vegas. As soon as we confirm the crash testing facility we can confirm that date. As always, the most up-to-date information regarding any of the ARC-CSI Crash Conferences including 2006 is available online at www.CrashConferences.com

CRASH TESTING SUMMARY

This year we conducted a series of 9 crash tests. All of the crashes were filmed and fully instrumented with the help of Biomechanical Research and Testing. Following is an overview of the tests:

  • Test #1-2: North Las Vegas PD sponsored research into the effect of push bumpers on deployments, occupant exposure and motion. Examination compared two Crown Vics in low closing speed and then higher closing speed events.
  • Test #3: Cavalier to Pedestrian (Speed: 33mph)
  • Test #4: Crown Vic head-on to Hyundai (Speed: 36mph)
  • Test #5: Cavalier to Pedestrian (Speed: 38mph)
  • Test #6: Crown Vic head-on to Hyundai w/ child seat (Speed: 34mph)
  • Test #7: RX7 into rear of trailer (Speed: 27mph)
  • Test #8: Multi-vehicle - Grand Prix to rear of RX7 to rear of trailer (Speed: 27 mph)
  • Test #9: Multi-vehicle - Grand Am to rear of Cavalier to side-under ride of trailer (Speed: 44mph)
