Case Study: Pedestrian Accident Analysis
Unique pedestrian impact dynamics and trajectory

Vivek Khurana, Jeff Wheeler - Vector Scientific

Introduction
A truck driver (5'8", 165 Ibs.) was following conventional practices by unloading his trailer while parked in
the median of an industrial roadway. As he opened the trailer door into oncoming traffic an SUV collided
with the trailer door, as well as the truck driver. For various liability reasons, a forensic biomechanics
analysis was undertaken to determine the position of the truck driver and the trailer door at impact, and if
the SUV driver could have avoided the collision.

Methods
Available evidence consisted of scene photographs, a police report with scene specific measurements, and
medical records of the truck driver.

The scene photographs displayed the damage to the SUV and the trailer door (Figure 1A). The SUV
damage consisted of windshield and A-pillar damage from the trailer door and a scuff to the left fender.
Damage to the trailer door was limited to the lower left corner. There was no evidence of bodily contact on
the trailer door itself.
