Accident Reconstruction News Article

A Uniontown woman is dead after a two-vehicle accident on Route 837 in West Mifflin.

Sherri McGibbon, 37, was pronounced dead Sunday at UPMC Presbyterian, where she was transported after a crash that took place near the Duquesne-McKeesport bridge at approximately 11 p.m.

She was headed south on Route 837 in a 1991 Honda driven by her husband Alister McGibbon, 40 - their children Ashley, 13, and Andrew, 6, also were in the car - when a 2000 Plymouth Neon veered into their lane, police said.

A head-on collision ensued.

Crews from Prism Health Services, Duquesne EMS, White Oak EMS, Munhall Area Prehospital Services, Dravosburg Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1, McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Service, and North Versailles Fire Department responded to the scene.

Alistair McGibbon was taken to UPMC Presbyterian with his wife. Police said his last known condition was serious. Ashley and Andrew were taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Their conditions were unknown to police as of presstime.

West Mifflin police said the Neon's 17-year-old driver, who resides in the Venetia section of Peters Twp., told officers she was talking to her mother via cell phone at the time of the accident.

"The 17-year old apparently was talking with her mother when she looked up saw the sign that said 'McKeesport left' and 'Duquesne right,'" West Mifflin Police Capt. Joseph Popovich said.

With the girl not being familiar with the Mon Valley, it would have been easy for her to misunderstand the signage, Popovich said.

"I'm talking to PennDOT today to see if we can get that sign moved because we've had a couple other accidents there," Popovich said. "It's very deceiving. That sign should probably be 50 yards up the road."

Popovich said Allegheny County Homicide is expected to return to the scene today for an accident reconstruction survey. The road is marked where the accident occurred.

No charges have been filed.
