TOKYO, Oct 26, 2004 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- Toyota Motor
Corp. said Tuesday it is recalling some 340,000 units of five sport-utility
and commercial vehicle models for free replacement of defective
parts.
The total includes 330,496 units of the Toyota Hilux
Surf, Hilux Surf 4WD and Hilux Surf Wagon whose steering wheels
could become uncontrollable because of weak relay rods, Toyota said
in a report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The vehicles were manufactured between December 1988
and May 1996.
One person was injured in an accident caused by the
defect in Kikuchi, Kumamoto Prefecture, in August.
Toyota is also recalling 9,141 commercial vehicles
in its Liteace and Townace families because of excessive play in
the steering wheels.
The vehicles were made between July 2003 and June
this year.
