DETROIT, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News), a global leader in wireless,
broadband and automotive communications technologies, unveiled its
latest product portfolio of automotive sensors, including tire pressure
sensors, inertial sensors and high-pressure sensors at Convergence
2004 in Detroit.
Motorola's tire pressure sensor is designed to surpass
the governmental standard for safety (NHTSA's FMVSS 138) for driver
warning systems when tire inflation becomes significantly low. The
recently passed U.S. mandate requires 100 percent of new production
U.S. light vehicles include tire pressure sensors by 2008. By incorporating
such sensors into tires, both fuel efficiency and tire life can
be improved.
Due to its reliable seal configuration, automakers
can easily integrate Motorola's tire pressure sensor into a vehicle
during tire installation. The product, which includes a custom Application
Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), sensor cluster and snap-in valve
system packaging, also provides extended battery life through custom
hardware and software designs. Launch is scheduled for 2008 model
year vehicles.
Motorola also unveiled an inertial sensor module which
measures a vehicle's directional motion and acceleration using silicon
micro-machined gyroscopes and accelerometers. This product family
can be used by:
-- Vehicle dynamic control systems to correct over-
and under-steering conditions
-- Safety systems to sense potential rollover characteristics
-- Active chassis systems for active cruise control and steer-by-wire
applications.
Motorola's inertial sensor platform, which includes
a modular architecture, enables automakers to reduce system costs,
combine multiple sensors in a single package and output the sensor
data to multiple systems via either Controller Area Network Bus
(CAN) or other digital bus. Initial production launch is scheduled
for 2008 model year vehicles.
Additionally, Motorola is showcasing its portfolio
of automotive embedded high-pressure sensors which are critical
components of numerous in-vehicle systems. Motorola will display
an array of sensor applications including rail diesel-injection
fuel pressure, gasoline direct-injection fuel pressure, brake hydraulic
pressure (for vehicles with stability control) and continuous variable
transmission fluid pressure. These high- pressure sensors are scheduled
for 2006 and 2007 model year vehicles.
