Subaru recalls 163,000 vehicles in the U.S.

DETROIT, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Japanese automaker Subaru said on Thursday that it will recall 163,243 vehicles sold in the United States after tests found that the vehicles could shift out of park and begin rolling without warning.

The recalled vehicles, all with automatic transmissions, include some late production 2001 Legacy vehicles, all 2002 Legacy, Outback, Forester and Impreza vehicles and some early production 2003 Legacy, Outback, Baja, Forester and Impreza vehicles.

Subaru, a unit of Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (Tokyo:7270.T - News), said that a possible defect in the automatic transmission parking rod could cause the parking gear to not be fully engaged.

Subaru said it discovered the problem during quality tests, and it had no reports of any injuries resulting from faulty transmission parts.

Subaru said it will notify all affected owners soon about the recall, and repair parts should be available in January. Owners can put their parking braking on to ensure that the vehicles will not roll when parked, Subaru said.
