UPDATE - Mitsubishi recalls trucks after accidents

(Adds comments by Mitsubishi, ministry, DaimlerChrysler's stake)
TOKYO, March 11 (Reuters) - Truck maker Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus has told Japan's Transport Ministry it is recalling vehicles due to faulty wheel hubs, the ministry said on Thursday.

A Mitsubishi spokeswoman said she did not know how many vehicles were involved. She said the company was aware of about 40 accidents that had been blamed on wheels coming off vehicles.

Japanese media reports said some of the accidents had resulted in deaths.

The ministry said it was still investigating, and was not at present considering punishing the company, which is a unit of Germany's DaimlerChrysler AG (XETRA:DCXGn.DE - News).

Business daily Nihon Keizai said on Thursday that Mitsubishi had already voluntarily recalled most of the vehicles involved.

Mitsubishi officials had initially insisted that the accidents were caused by bad maintenance or overloading, the paper said.
