DaimlerChrysler recalls 1,650 Smart cars

FRANKFURT, June 22 (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler (DCXGn.DE: QuoteProfile , Research) has recalled 1,650 of its new-generation Smart minicar because of possible steering defects, the company said on Friday.

A Smart spokesman said all the cars' owners had been notified that a part may not have been installed properly, which could have led to steering failure. He said he was unaware of any accidents resulting from the problem.

Smart sold 12,200 units of the tiny two-seater in May, the second month after its market launch. Smart intends to make its debut in the U.S. market with the model early next year.
