Walton Crash Victim Identified

Alice Burke, 50, of Sparta was killed in an accident on Interstate 71 in Walton Monday night.

Burke was driving southbound when she lost control of her 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 and drove through the emergency turnaround, into the median and hit a tractor-trailer just behind the driver's door ripping into the fuel tank, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

The impact caused the semi, driven by Lachezar Strelkov, 33 of Windsor, Ontario, to skid sideways into a median and overturn. Burke was pronounced dead at the scene and Strelkov refused medical treatment, police reported.

The UTL Transportation Services semi was hauling 41,680 pounds of plastic powder from Louisville to Windsor, Ontario.

The accident closed I-71 in both directions for nearly an hour before one lane northbound and southbound were opened while construction crews worked to stop diesel fuel.

The accident is being investigated by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Team. Alice Burke, 50, of Sparta was killed in an accident on Interstate 71 in Walton Monday night.
