Milford teen dies in Barre crash

BARRE— A Milford teenager died yesterday afternoon when the car in which he was riding hit a utility pole on South Barre Road.

Police Chief Erik J. Demetropoulos said the 17-year-old male, whose name was not released, was riding in a 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by 17-year-old Jeffrey Harnois of 228 Pleasant St.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. at 859 South Barre Road.

State and local police were investigating last night. Chief Demetropoulos said the initial investigation indicated that excessive speed, alcohol and cellular telephone use did not appear to be factors in the crash. The speed limit in the area is 25 mph.

The front passenger side of the van apparently struck the pole near the intersection of Elm Street, breaking off a piece of wood, then continuing on and eventually coming to rest near Grove Street.

The Milford teen was transported to Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, where he was pronounced dead.

Police believe he was not wearing a seat belt, but said it was unclear whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Mr. Harnois was taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus in Worcester. The chief said he was conscious at the scene.

The Fire Department and Barre Rescue Squad responded to the crash. The passenger side of the van sustained heavy damage. Barre police, along with state police from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, are working to determine the cause of the accident.
