| US closes safety probe of Camry, Lexus models
WASHINGTON, July
27 (Reuters) - The U.S. government has closed a safety investigation
of three Toyota Motor Corp. (Tokyo:7203.T - News) models, including
the best-selling Camry, over claims of sudden acceleration, documents
showed on Tuesday.
The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration found no defect with the throttle
control system with certain Camry, Camry Solara and Lexus ES300
models.
Regulators opened
the investigation in March after receiving reports of 30 crashes
that injured at least five people. Complaints said the vehicles
suddenly and unexpectedly surged forward.
More than 1
million vehicles from the the 2002 and 2003 model years were covered
by the investigation that was concluded on July 22 with no action
taken, safety agency documents showed.
In a separate
case, NHTSA said on Monday that Toyota is recalling more than 128,000
2002-04 Camry sedans because of a potential problem with side curtain
air bags.
The government
said the problem stems from improper factory assembly and could
cause incomplete air bag deployment in the event of a crash.
