BMW Confirms Recall Of X5s, Expects Costs To Total EUR5 Million

FRANKFURT -(Dow Jones)- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG will recall 164, 000 X5 Sports Activity vehicles due to a potential defect with the braking system, a spokesman for the company confirmed Friday.

The premium carmaker expects the problem to cost no more than EUR5 million.

Significant vibrations can cause the brake hose to be detached from its mounting on the spring strut when the vehicle is moving, BMW said.

Under certain operating conditions, such as a higher load while cornering, the brake hose may grate against the spring strut or the inside of the wheel, and in extreme cases extended exposure may cause it to wear through.

"This may cause a loss of brake fluid all the way to total failure of the front brake circuit," the spokesman said.

Trade publication Automobilwoche reported earlier on the defective system, which had been discovered during an internal quality check, according to a BMW official cited in the article. There have been no accidents reported to date, it said.

The X5s in question were manufactured between August 1999 and April 2002, with about 19,000 of the cars in Germany, Automobilwoche said.
