Toyota recalling 22,000
Tacomas to fix parking brakes
DETROIT, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor
Corp. (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is recalling 22,228 of its 2005
model Tacoma pickup trucks sold on the U.S. market to fix a potential problem
with their parking brakes, federal safety regulators said on Tuesday.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the
problem stemmed from the fact that the parking brake cable lock nut on the
trucks may not have been tightened properly.
"The lock nut may loosen and come
off, which will reduce the effectiveness of the parking brake," NHTSA
said in an advisory on its Web site.
"This condition could allow the
vehicle to roll if the transmission is not placed into the 'park' position,"
the agency said.
It said the parking brake defect had only been detected
on Tacomas equipped with automatic transmissions.
