American Honda to recall
486,000 vehicles
NEW YORK, Feb 1 (Reuters) - American Honda Motor Co. said
on Tuesday it will recall 486,000 Hondas and Acuras to repair ignition switches.
Honda set the recall to repair ignition switch interlocks
which prevent removal of the ignition key unless the shift lever is placed
in the "Park" position, the company said in a press release.
Some interlock levers may be improperly dimensioned, the
company said, possibly allowing a driver to switch the ignition off and
remove the key without putting the shift lever in the "Park" position.
The voluntary recall involves automatic transmission equipped
vehicles -- manual transmission equipped vehicles are not affected.
Included in the recall are certain 1999 to 2002 Honda Accord
models and all 1997 to 2001 Prelude models as well as some 1999 to 2000
Acura TL sedans.
American Honda, a unit of Japan's Honda Motor Co. (7267.T:
Quote, Profile, Research) , will make the repairs free of charge.
Details regarding mailing dates and affected vehicles will
be available on the Honda and Acura Web sites on February 4, 2005.
