Adrian barber killed in crash

EAST LANSING - The investigation continues into a fatal crash involving a fuel tanker that killed an Adrian businessman and closed northbound U.S. 127 in Ingham County for about 12 hours Friday night and into early Saturday morning.

East Lansing Police Department Capt. Kim Johnson confirmed Monday that James Michael Jasmund, 61, of Manitou Beach was killed in the accident. Jasmund was the owner of Jim’s Barber Shop, 113 S. Main St., in Adrian.

Johnson said a tanker carrying 19,000 gallons of fuel overturned at about 4:45 p.m. Friday on northbound U.S. 127 near the Trowbridge Road exit ramp. The tanker rolled onto Jasmund’s sport utility vehicle. According to Johnson, Jasmund’s wife, Karen, 54, was driving the SUV at the time of the crash and suffered life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. An updated report on her condition was not available by press time.

An unidentified 58-year-old Lansing man was the driver of the Great Lakes Petroleum tanker involved in the crash. He was hospitalized with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Johnson said.

According to Johnson, the East Lansing police, Michigan State University police and Michigan State Police accident reconstruction teams are working together in the investigation. He said it could take several weeks to determine the cause of the crash and whether any citations will be issued. Johnson said that because a fatality occurred, the case will be referred to the Ingham County prosecutor for further investigation once the police report is finished. At that time, it will be determined whether any citations will be issued.

According to published reports, the tanker’s fuel was mostly contained and crews pumped the fuel into an empty tanker. The freeway reopened at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
