Locus Dialogue Speech-Enables Road Conditions Telephone System; Speech Recognition Access to Telephone Information Improves Road Safety

MONTREAL, Aug. 9 /CNW/ -- Locus Dialogue Inc., the world's fastest-growing speech recognition company, will provide the speech interface for the province of Quebec's road conditions telephone system, which will enable motorists to access road conditions using speech recognition technology via the mobile telephone. Incorporating Locus Dialogue's speech recognition interface, Bell Canada will lead the road conditions project and CGI will integrate the technology. Locus Dialogue's speech recognition interface is based on the SoftDialogue(TM) application development environment. Created for service providers and system integrators, the SoftDialogue(TM) suite enables the development of custom applications by providing the elements to speech-enable communications solutions.

Starting this autumn, the Quebec government's road conditions telephone system will be available province-wide, in English and French, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Callers will be able to access continuously updated information on winter road conditions and summer roadwork simply by saying their points of departure and arrival. Using the names of cities or towns, the system will identify and provide the conditions for the most direct route available.

System Eliminates Touch-Tone Interface

A speech recognition interface greatly benefits motorists using mobile telephones. Previously, the road conditions telephone system was based on a dual tone multi frequency (DTMF), or 'touch-tone,' interface that required users to access information by entering numerical codes. Locus Dialogue's speech recognition interface improves automotive safety by eliminating the conflict between watching the road and pressing keys on a wireless telephone.

In addition to the safety benefits, Locus Dialogue's speech recognition interface offers the freedom of human speech, versus the limitations of the telephone keypad. Furthermore, the speech recognition interface reduces the average airtime of each call, which increases the cost-efficiency of wireless subscription.

"Locus Dialogue is playing a pivotal role in simplifying and optimizing the Quebec Ministry of Transport's road conditions telephone system," says Mary Dunlop, president and CEO of Locus Dialogue. "We have already demonstrated our ability to deploy large scale solutions in cooperation with Bell Canada and its partners. For example, the ePhone Book uses Locus Dialogue's technology to serve more than 750,000 Bell clients," Ms. Dunlop adds.
