Kia recalls over 24,000 U.S. cars for wheel defect

DETROIT, April 27 (Reuters) - Kia Motors Corp. (000270.K: Quote, Profile, Research) is recalling 24,119 Rio sedans in the United States because their wheels could crack and come off the vehicle, according to federal safety regulators.

The vehicles from the Korean auto maker affected by the recall, which is expected to begin at the end of May, are from the 2001 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

"If cracking is severe, the wheel could fail and separate from the mounting hub and possibly result in loss of vehicle control and a crash," NHTSA said in an advisory on its Web site Wednesday.
