GM to recall 2 million-plus vehicles
By Shawn Langlois, MarketWatch
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- General Motors, at a time
when it's in dire need of good news, said Monday that it will recall more
than 2 million vehicles, including some of its most popular cars and trucks.
Of the overall total, about 1.5 million full-size sport utility
vehicles and pickup trucks mostly sold in the United States, are being called
back to the shop to fix the seat belt positioning in the rear seats.
Burnham Securities analyst David Healy predicted the move
could cost General Motors between $100 million and $200 million.
"In terms of GM's bank account, the cost will probably
be fairly trivial," Healy said. "But the company vehicle quality
has shown improvement in recent years, and something like this doesn't help."
The company said it wouldn't publicly discuss the cost of
the recall, which covers Chevy Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe and Avalanche
models, as well as Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Hummer H2 vehicles all
from model years 2003-05.
An additional 332,202 Suburban and Yukon models from 2000
to 2001 are being recalled for possible overheating of the fuel pump that
could result in engine stalling and fuel leaks.
Also, 142,585 Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from 1999-2002
and 2500/3500 Series pickups from 2001-04 have been tagged for recall, as
have more than 100,000 Buick models from 2004 and 2005 for potential brake
and ignition problems.
What's more, 22,115 Saturn L Series Wagons from the 2002-04
model years are being recalled to comply with safety standards.
GM said it is not aware of any injuries resulting from the
six issues covered in the recalls, adding that owners will be notified on
May 4.
