The
Center for Public Safety was founded by Northwestern University as the Traffic
Institute in 1936 for the purpose of traffic safety. Since that time the
Northwestern University Center for Public Safety has broadened it's scope
to include curriculum in police operations & management. The Center
serves local, county, state, federal, and foreign government agencies through
programs of specialized training, continuing education, research & development,
publications and direct assistance.

Since 1936 the Center for Public Safety has led the world in the scientific study of accident investigation and reconstruction. Now you can access that same expertise online. Accident Investigation 1 & 2 will provide you with the same information and the same comprehensive study of accident investigation as presented during the Center’s two-week on-campus courses. You will learn to make measurements, sketches, after-accident diagrams, photographs, and more. Learn in an interactive format with instructors to guide you and grade your projects and exams. In an effort to meet your needs, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety has redesigned its Accident Investigation Courses so that your agency can take advantage of our superior instruction in a variety of ways.

You enroll in courses on-campus at Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. You get hands on practical approach for all levels of accident investigation and reconstruction from our expert instructors.
- If you have some technical experience and are a self starter you can take Accident Investigation 1 Online & Accident 2 Online. This newly revised comprehensive program provides you with the same information and the same comprehensive study of accident investigation as presented during the Center’s two-week on-campus courses. You will learn to make measurements, sketches, after-accident diagrams, photographs and more. You will also be taught in an interactive format, with instructors to guide you through the process and grade your projects and exams. After successfully completing Accident Investigation 1 & 2 Online, you will be prepared to begin the entire series of advanced investigation and reconstruction courses offered on campus at Northwestern University.

Your agency enters into a contract with us. We bring our instructors to you for the same high-quality instruction on-site.

Your agency purchases the Center’s Accident Investigation Instructional Materials and uses your own qualified instructor for the three basic accident investigation courses.
Please note that for most courses offered by the Center for Public Safety arrangements can be made to host a class On-site, at a location of your choice. For details, please contact Dawn Marincic Patten, Associate Director of the Transportation Safety Division.
