The ARC Network is pleased to announce a new member benefit
All current members of the ARC Network can
now download a FREE copy of Jeff Muttart's DRIVE3 from REC-TEC
software (a $250 value) from the member's only section of the ARC
Network. If you are currently not a member of the ARC Network, simply go to
the Membership Section of the ARC Network
and sign up online. Memberships start at just $69 per year! Once you have
your ARC Network membership, just log in to the ARC Network Member's Only
section and follow the instructions for downloading your free copy.
Please Note: This is a limited time offer and
the licensed copy of DRIVE3 will expire in July 2008.
Driver
Response in Various Environments Empirically Estimated by Jeff
Muttart
This program is the results of 10 years of research
and is based upon the response times of drivers in research and
in real traffic situations. At the present time over 145 studies
and 206 real traffic responses that have been recorded have been
utilized to develop a series of equations that predict driver response
times. The equations have been compared to the response times of
real world drivers and have estimated the actual response times
within ½ second 75% of the time and within ¾ second
90% of the time.
Since the equations were derived from the studies,
it would then make sense that driver response could also be estimated
by using a research study as a baseline. Therefore, DRIVE3 estimates
driver response times using a baseline (study) and adjusting it
to correspond to the scenario being investigated. In this way, DRIVE3
will offer the user a cross check of the estimated response time.
The program also calculates time and distance relationships of the
vehicle while accounting for issues such as time for a exiting driver
to glance, start up latency and threshold at which drivers are able
to detect relative velocity. The estimations calculated by DRIVE3
are included in the time and distance solutions.
As with any scientific method, there are limitations
to this program in that there needs to be much more research done
and the user must use the tool properly. However, at the present
time, this program offers the only two methods of driver response
estimation that are empirically tested to be able to reasonably
estimate response time of real drivers.
The research upon which this program is based has
been peer reviewed by the University of Hartford psychology and
engineering departments and the Society of Automotive Engineers
before being published. Jeff Muttart has received the Wallace Award
for excellence in research and the Graduate Research Award at the
University of Hartford for his research in this regard. This program
is being used by over 300 traffic accident reconstructionists, police
officers, and forensic engineers in 7 different countries.
